"Hello! My name is Stephanie, thank you for considering me as a teacher for your student(s).

Originally from West Bloomfield, I am moving back to the Detroit after 7 years of teaching in New York City as a founding teacher at the Academy for Software Engineering, a public high school in Manhattan. I have primarily taught Mathematics (Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Personal Finance, and Geometry), but also have experience with college counseling and ELA. I was the Director of Special Education at my school, and my certification is in special education, therefore I have a lot of experience working with a variety of learning styles and students on all academic levels. I have also privately tutored middle school math students and have coached/mentored multiple first year teachers a a master teacher at my school. I am also a yoga instructor and incorporate meditative practices in my work with students regularly.

The most important element of teaching for me is building strong relationships with students, which is why I love this work. Without a strong connection between teacher and learner, effective learning cannot be achieved. I then do my best to make learning fun and relevant to what my individual students are interested in through games, hands-on activities, team projects, and reward systems. Especially while learning is remote, creating opportunities for students to collaborate with others and not look at a screens is key, as Zoom fatigue is very real!

I am moving back to Michigan to complete a Masters in Public Affairs at the University of Michigan, with a focus on education reform and policy. I am looking to work with students part time while I complete school."

My teaching philosophy is: My favorite thing about teaching is making connections with students and figuring out how to make learning relevant, exctiing and accessible for them. I try to have fun with it and provide a comfortable environment for students to grow and make mistakes.

I teach:Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, 11th grade ELA, College Counseling/Mentorship, Personal Finance
